Gannett, the country's largest newspaper chain, is once again threatening to lay off employees and shut down or sell off local newspapers. The news comes after years of doing exactly that. Since 2019, the company has sold off or shut down 171 newspapers in local communities across the country, laying off roughly 14,000 employees in the process. As a result, many smaller cities are becoming news deserts, without access to a single newspaper that covers local news. Sign the petition urging Gannett to stop abandoning local communities.
